September 17 - Hidden in Plain Sight: The Story of LGBTQ Kansas City

Speaker: Joel Barrett, Creator and Producer of the KC Rainbow Tour

The LGBTQ rights movement did not begin on the coasts and slowly make its way inland. Kansas City was not a passive observer of history. It was a participant and a pioneer. Courageous and creative people in the heartland were organizing, building culture, and creating safe spaces long before many realize. This fast-paced talk shares the bold stories, hidden spaces, and resilient leaders who built community here in Kansas City and how the KC Rainbow Tour brings that history to life. Explore historical stories and places like Womontown, The Liberty Memorial, Soakies black gay bar, the Phoenix Society and more.

Joel Barrett is the creator and producer of the KC Rainbow Tour, an immersive experience that uncovers and celebrates Kansas City’s rich LGBTQ+ history through powerful storytelling and community engagement. Often referring to himself as “the accidental historian,” Joel brings to life the people, places, and pivotal moments that shaped queer culture in the Midwest through self-guided audio tours, private charter bus experiences, and upcoming walking and streetcar tours.

Joel is also the founder of Joel Speaks Out, a platform dedicated to storytelling, advocacy, and conversations at the intersection of identity, faith, entrepreneurship, and resilience. In addition, he serves as a Senior Business Development Consultant with the Missouri Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UMKC, where he has coached thousands of entrepreneurs and helped launch hundreds of businesses while supporting millions in capital investment and sales growth.

Joel blends history, entrepreneurship, and lived experience to inspire audiences to preserve stories, build bold ideas, and strengthen community.
