NOVEMBER 5 - Rescued Horses Healing Heroes

Every week, veterans, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics arrive at Horses & Heroes carrying burdens that are often invisible. Many have spent years protecting others while silently battling PTSD, anxiety, depression, and isolation. Here, in the quiet presence of rescued horses who have also survived trauma and abandonment, they discover something many thought was no longer possible—safety, connection, and hope. Join us for this special Veteran’s Day-themed talk exploring Horses & Heroes (H&H), a Kansas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that brings together two healing journeys—rescued horses overcoming hardship and veterans, first responders, and their families recovering from trauma. Learn how Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) provides a trauma-responsive, experiential approach that engages the brain and body to help individuals rebuild trust, regulate emotions, and rediscover connection.
Julie Baker is the Founder and Executive Director of Horses & Heroes, a nonprofit dedicated to providing no-cost trauma recovery services for military families and first responders. Combining her education in neuroscience and trauma with a lifelong commitment to serving others, Julie developed an innovative program that integrates evidence-informed approaches to healing the brain, body, and emotions through equine-assisted psychotherapy.
Founded in 2014 in Leavenworth, Kansas, Horses & Heroes is built on the belief that resilience can be cultivated and that the brain can heal after trauma. By partnering rescued horses with those who have served their communities and country, the organization creates a safe, supportive environment where healing, connection, and hope flourish. Julie's leadership is driven by a vision of strengthening individuals, empowering families, and building more resilient communities.
